市長辦公室表示 市長派克對目前參議院折衷NASA計劃表示樂觀

(07/17/2010)

Mayor Annise Parker called Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison’s NASA funding compromise measure approved by the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation a step in the right direction, but cautioned it is not the final step.

“We have worked for months to bring people together to craft a compromise on the future of NASA” said Mayor Parker. “This gives us some breathing room and the opportunity to continue the ongoing work to protect the great work being done at Johnson Space Center. There is still much to do and we can take nothing for granted.”

The mayor offered a big thank you to Senator Hutchison for her work in crafting this bi-partisan proposal. “Without the senator’s tireless commitment the committee’s unanimous vote would not have been possible,” said Mayor Parker. “This comes as no surprise to Houstonians, as Kay has always fought on behalf of Texans.”

Mayor Parker also extended thanks to the Greater Houston Partnership, the Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership, Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, Council Member Mike Sullivan and the entire Texas Congressional delegation for their help in getting us to this point. “We are extremely pleased with this development,” said Patrick Oxford, Chairman of GHP’s Board of Directors. “It took a prodigious push on the part of the region’s elected officials and members of Texas’ congressional delegation to reach this moment. Sen. Hutchison’s incredible effort in negotiating this compromise was exceptional and illustrates her commitment to the Johnson Space Center, a true Crown Jewel in our region.”

The committee’s proposal would reauthorize funding for NASA for three years, preserving 80 percent of the jobs that would have been lost at Johnson Space Center (JSC) under the administration’s proposal. It also extends the International Space Station program, managed at JSC, and funds a shuttle replacement program along with a continued investment in commercial space ventures. More details about the bill are available on the Committee’s website.

There are still several hurdles ahead, including passage by the full Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives and the President’s signature.
