Crime Stoppers of Houston, Sheriff Adrian Garcia and Houston City Council Member Ed Gonzalez Joining Forces to Combat Organized Retail Crime

(09/20/2010)

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia and Houston City Council Member Ed Gonzalez join Katherine Cabaniss, Executive Director of Crime Stoppers of Houston along with HPD Assistant Chief George Buenik and Pasadena Assistant Chief Bud Corbett for a news conference on Monday September 20th to announce an aggressive new campaign to combat Organized Retail Crime (ORC). Joining in the announcement is the Greater Houston Loss Prevention Alliance (GHLPA) that includes representatives from Fiesta, HEB, Kroger, Randall’s, Target and Wal-Mart. Also participating are representatives from CVS and Walgreen’s.

Organized Retail Crime refers to groups, gangs, or individuals who are engaged in an illegal business enterprise: obtaining retail merchandise through theft or fraud. Products are then resold at smaller stores, pawn shops, flea markets, swap meets and internet auction sites. The top stolen products are designer clothing, electronics, medications and baby items. ORC ultimately drives up the prices for consumers and according to the FBI costs more than $15 billion annually.

Clear Channel Outdoor and Yellow Cab are providing billboards in and around the Houston area to remind citizens to report Organized Retail Crime. The corporate partners in the GHLPA will provide the same information to their customers.

Crime Stoppers will offer up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and/or charging of any suspect for Organized Retail Crime. Callers are urged to call 713-222-TIPS, or submit a tip online at www.crime-stoppers.org. Tips can also be sent by text message-text TIP610 plus your tip to CRIMES(274637). All tipsters remain anonymous.
