Know Your U.N. Series:
The INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY (IAEA)

(09/24/2010)

"Three months after the United Nations Security Council enacted its harshest sanctions yet against Iran, global nuclear inspectors reported Monday that the country has dug in its heels, refusing to provide inspectors with the information and access they need to determine whether the real purpose of Tehran's program is to produce weapons."

New York Times. Sept. 7, 2010

What can the International Atomic Energy Agency do about this stonewalling? What work do the inspectors do? What power does the IAEA have?

UNA Houston Leadership, Henry Horne and Robert Moll will delve into this complex topic. Mr. Horne, is currently doing research for the League of Women Voters on the subject. Mr. Moll practices International Law with clients that include UN/FAO World Food Programme.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957. Though independent of the United Nations through its own international treaty, the IAEA reports to both the UN General Assembly and Security Council.

The IAEA serves as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology and nuclear power worldwide. The programs of the IAEA encourage the development of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, provide international safeguards against misuse of nuclear technology and nuclear materials, and promote nuclear safety (including radiation protection) and nuclear security standards and their implementation.
