Mayor Parker Applauds Iraq War Veteran’s Walk Across America to Help Military Families

Stop in Houston Scheduled Friday, February 19

On Friday, February 19th, Mayor Annise Parker will meet with Troy Yocum, an Iraq War veteran who founded Hike for Our Heroes – an effort to raise $5 million to help military families by walking 7,000 miles across the country. Mayor Parker also proclaimed Friday as “Hike for Our Heroes Day” in Houston in Yocum’s honor.

“Supporting our military and their families is high on the list for Houstonians,” said Mayor Parker. “I commend Mr. Yocum for taking on this task to promote this worthy cause, and hope Houston can help him exceed his fundraising goal.”

With his wife Mareike and Emmie the SuperDog by his side, Yocum began his 16-month quest last April. They completed the western leg of the journey from Kentucky to California on Veterans Day. They are now heading back east, walking through Houston, Atlanta, Washington D.C., New York and Boston. They will then head back west and finish where they started in Louisville, KY.

Buddy Grantham, Mayor Parker’s Director of Veteran Affairs, added, “In the Houston area, we have over 300,000 total veterans and over 20,000 service members who chose Houston as their home in the last decade. I am honored that I can help with projects like Hike For Heroes to assist in recognizing the many needs of our returning heroes and help to meet those needs as we work together to make Houston the best place for veterans to live."

Yocum is scheduled to visit the following veteran posts on Friday, February 19th:

AMERICAN LEGION Post 560 / Arrive at 11:30 - leave at noon

VFW Post 8905 / Arrive at 1 PM - leave at 1:30 PM

AMERICAN LEGION Post 586 / Arrive at 2 PM - Leave at 2:30 PM

AMERICAN LEGION Post 578 / Arrive at 4:30 - leave at 5 PM

VFW Post 10352 / Arrive at 6:30 - leave by 7 pm
