Mayor Parker Encourages “LightsOut” Houston, Invites Public to Celebrate Earth Day

Mayor Annise Parker encourages Houston residents and visitors to join in a weekend of Earth Day activities. On Thursday, April 21, the City of Houston will participate in “LightsOut Houston,” a public awareness campaign that promotes energy conservation by turning off lights at offices and homes. It is estimated that by eliminating just 50% of the lights routinely left on overnight and on the weekends in downtown Houston, Houston could save almost $1 million dollars annually. Building owners and managers can sign up at www.lightsouthouston.com.

Then the City will host this year’s Earth Day Celebration at Discovery Green on Saturday, April 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Houston’s third annual event expects 15,000 people to attend this free celebration of the environment. Features include the Earth Zone, the Environmental Education Zone, the Urban Harvest Farmers Market, recycled art activities, a Green Expo, new Eco Landscaping "green gardening" Zone and the Kids Energy Zone.
