EXOTIC BIRDS AND TROPICAL AND NATIVE PLANTS
TAKE CENTER STAGE AT THE HOUSTON ZOO
Saturday May 14, 2011

(HOUSTON) April 27, 2011 … The Houston Zoo is home not only to a widely diverse bird collection but also features a lush and diverse array of tropical and native plants. On Saturday May 14, 2011 our fine feathered friends and the Zoo’s horticulture department will take center stage in two early morning events – Photo Day and a guided horticulture tour.

Horticulture Tour

An oasis in the midst of a bustling metropolis, the Houston Zoo is home to a lush and diverse array of tropical and native plants, flowers, majestic live oaks, and various palms, cycads and exotic bamboos, as well as flowers of every color, shape and size.

On Saturday, May 14 from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m. Houston Zoo Horticulture Manager Joe Williams will lead an intimate stroll across Zoo grounds, highlighting the many species of plant life that flourish across the Zoo’s 55 acres. Join us as Joe outlines the details, history, and maintenance requirements of the Zoo’s variety of flora.

The Houston Zoo’s team of horticulture professionals invests more than 20,000 hours each year planting, cultivating and pruning to create a healthy, vibrant and colorful landscape for our guests and our animals.

Ticket holders will enjoy early access to the Zoo (at 7 a.m., 2 hours prior to our normal opening time), a continental breakfast, animal enrichment photo opportunities and all-day access to the Zoo, including The African Forest, until our normally scheduled closing time.

Take advantage of the early morning light and see our keepers at work as they prepare for the Zoo day. Please note, not all animals may be out on exhibit immediately, however our keepers do their best to have a variety of species on exhibit as early as possible. This event is rain or shine.
