Chinese American Citizens Alliance
Opens 51st Biennial Convention

(07/27/2011)

Houston, Texas—The Chinese American Citizens Alliance opens its 51st Biennial National Convention today at the Hilton Houston Post Oak, an IM Pei designed landmark, located at 2001 Post Oak Boulevard in the heart of the Galleria. The convention’s theme is "Commitment: Our Future, Our Legacy" as the organization sharpens its role as national leader in serving our communities and improving the quality of lives of Chinese Americans by fighting injustice and intolerance, exercising good citizenship and patriotism, and working through the challenges and opportunities confronting our great nation today.

Grand President Carolyn Chan will welcome the delegates from the local lodges around the country who comprise the Grand Council along with the Grand Board of Officers. Grand Officers and Committee Chairpersons will report on progress of actions made on previously passed resolutions and board approved directives on national issues. Announcements of national scholarship awards and the introduction of our designated “Fellows” will be made.

Mayor of Houston Annise Parker is scheduled to provide her welcome greetings at today’s luncheon followed by a Personal Finance Workshop for the delegates.

The Alliance business sessions continue with discussion on Resolutions that impact the C.A.C.A.’s national agenda while also listening to Local Lodge reports. A workshop led by the USCIS (United States Citizenship & Immigration Services) will launch the citizenship public education and awareness initiative to raise awareness about the rights, responsibilities and importance of U.S. citizenship. The Citizenship Public Education and Awareness Initiative will provide new opportunities for immigrants to learn about USCIS’s free citizenship education resources available to eligible lawful permanent residents (LPRs) and immigrant-serving organizations.

The Opening Night Dinner hosted by the Grand Lodge at Willie G’s Restaurant features guest speaker, Angela Chen Button, State Representative of Texas.
