Burton Reckles is an internationally recognized artisan whose glass-encapsulated miniatures (GEMS) have been displayed in museums around the world. Many individuals are acquainted with GEMS as "ships in bottles." With less than 100 practitioners in the United States and approximately the same in Europe, this 400-year-old art form is slowly dying making, this presentation exceptionally rare.

Join Holocaust Museum Houston as Reckles highlights the nearly 20-year journey it took to complete his latest GEMS "Eulogy." What began as a simple ancestry search turned into a meaningful work of art. "Eulogy" serves as a memorial for the great-grandmother and two great-aunts who perished during the Holocaust. Reckles will also share insider tips on how to create your own GEMS.

After Reckles discovered the loss of his family members during the Holocaust, he turned his talents to creating GEMS pieces related to both antisemitism and the events of the Holocaust. These unique pieces of art have been recognized by both Yad Vashem and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In 2006, Holocaust Museum Houston hosted an exhibition of Reckles' works entitled "Antisemitism: Exodus to the Holocaust." Reckles is currently the only Holocaust artist working in this medium.

Over the years, Reckles has received 15 first- or second-place awards in international and statewide art competitions. He has written eight technical and historical articles on his art that have been published in national and international magazines. Reckles is a member of the Technical Assistance Network of the Nautical Research Guild and a board member of the Houston Maritime Museum. The Texas Commission on the Arts recognizes him as an Artist in Residence.

Reckles' presentation is presented as part of "First Thursdays." Holocaust Museum Houston will be open extended hours on the First Thursday of every month. The Museum will remain open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for Members at the Sponsor Level and above. Reckles' presentation will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.
