GET OUT AND PLAY AT THE HOUSTON ZOO

Join Us for Challenging Games and Activities for Children and Adults

Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

(HOUSTON) September 7, 2011 … A generation of children and young adults are spending their lives plugged into the electronic world, unplugged from nature and the world around them. There’s even a name for it – Nature Deficit Disorder.

Studies have linked Nature Deficit Disorder to childhood obesity and diabetes and have shown that kids who spend more time outside in unstructured play benefit from improved health and academic performance. Today's children spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using electronic media such as TV, computers, video games and music players — equivalent to a full-time job.

That’s why the Houston Zoo is challenging everyone to GET OUT AND PLAY at the Zoo on Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enjoy exciting and challenging animal-themed games and activities for children and adults. Can you run as fast as a cheetah or a warthog? Is your jumping ability as good as a kangaroo or a jaguar? What does it take for an elephant to fill its trunk with water? Find out when you join the Houston Texans, KICKSTART KIDS, and other community groups and organizations during GET OUT AND PLAY and learn how children and adults of all ages can be active and enjoy nature in the city year-round.

GET OUT AND PLAY is sponsored by the Houston Texans and is supported by the follow participating partners:

KICKSTART KIDS

The Galveston Bay Foundation

Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network

Trinity River National River Refuge

REI
