Scholarships are available! STARTALK Texas Teacher Program at the University of Houston

(03/02/2012)

Thanks to the STARTALK grant, the National Security Language Initiative, the Chinese Studies Program at the University of Houston will offer scholarships to community college, secondary and heritage school teachers of Chinese to enroll in a graduate course, CHNS 6371: Teaching Chinese as a second language (July 9-20 and two follow-up sessions). Applicants who successfully complete the entire program will receive the scholarship that covers tuition & fees, instructional materials, and part of the housing cost for non-local participants. Awards ($400) are also available for participants who develop a quality program project and are willing to share with the public.

The program is designed to appeal to different learners. Through presentations, observations, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning, participants construct their knowledge in a learner-centered environment, and develop their capacity to become master teachers. Participants will 1) conceptualize the National Standards; apply the standards to theme-/content-based curriculum design and learner-centered instruction, 2) study SLA theories via examination of critical issues such as learning processes, comprehensible input, interactive learning, and task-based instruction, 3) examine Pedagogical Grammar such as tones, sentence structures, pragmatics and culture, and 4) use the national standards and teaching principles to develop theme-based curriculum and student-centered instructional projects.

Please fill out the online application ASAP or by 4/3/2012 @ http://www.uh.edu/class/mcl/chinese/startalk/UH%20StarTalk%20application.pdf

Applicants should include a one-page essay in English that describes:
1) What do you hope to achieve by participating in the program?
2) What project do you plan to develop to share with other teachers? The projects may include a standards-based curriculum design with theme-based units, daily lesson plans, curriculum materials tailored to their own students, or a course syllabus with instructional and assessment samples.
